Rare original ticket to the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson before the United States Senate, the first presidential impeachment trial in American history. Printed admission ticket in black on rose-colored card stock with the ticket stub detached, reading "U.S. Senate, Impeachment of the President, Admit the Bearer, April 2 1868, Gallery," with the engraved signature of Sergeant-at-Arms George T. Brown and the imprint of the Washington printers Philp & Solomons in the lower margin. In very good condition with light dust soiling. The piece measures 3.5 inches by 3 inches. A remarkable survival from one of the great constitutional dramas of the nineteenth century.
The impeachment of Andrew Johnson, the seventeenth President of the United States, was the first presidential impeachment trial in American history. In February 1868 the House of Representatives voted to impeach Johnson, largely over his violation of the Tenure of Office Act in his dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, amid a bitter struggle with the Radical Republicans in Congress over the course of Reconstruction. The Senate trial ran from March to May 1868, and on the decisive vote Johnson was acquitted by a single vote, cast by Senator Edmund G. Ross of Kansas. Public interest in the proceedings was intense, and admission to the crowded Senate gallery was controlled by these printed tickets, issued for specific dates and bearing the facsimile signature of the Sergeant-at-Arms, George T. Brown. Such tickets are prized survivals of a pivotal moment in the history of the American presidency and the Constitution.
