First Edition of A Treasury of Gilbert & Sullivan; From the Library of Broadway Composer Charles Strouse
First edition of this richly illustrated treasury of the words and music of one hundred and two songs drawn from the eleven Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Quarto, original half cloth, with color illustrations and musical arrangements. From the library of Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winning composer Charles Strouse and his wife, choreographer Barbara Siman, with Strouse's ownership stamp to the front free endpaper. Over his 50-year career, Charles Strouse wrote the music for such iconic musical theater hits as Bye Bye Birdie, Applause, and Annie, as well as the theme song for the classic sitcom All in the Family ("Those Were the Days"). His partnership with Martin Charnin on Annie produced one of Broadway's most successful scores ever, with "Tomorrow" and other songs from the production becoming enduring American musical standards admired by generations. His reach knew no genre or generation, from a number-one Billboard hit in 1958 to Jay-Z's Grammy-winning sampling of "It's the Hard-Knock Life" four decades later, and his honors include three Tony Awards and induction into both the Songwriters and Theater Halls of Fame. In good condition. Edited by Deems Taylor. Illustrated by Lucille Corcos. Musical arrangements by Dr. Albert Sirmay.
A Treasury of Gilbert & Sullivan gathers the words and music of one hundred and two songs drawn from the eleven comic operas of the librettist W. S. Gilbert and the composer Arthur Sullivan, whose partnership produced such enduring works as H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado. Edited by the composer and critic Deems Taylor, with musical arrangements by Dr. Albert Sirmay and full-color illustrations by Lucille Corcos, the volume was published by Simon and Schuster in 1941 and remains one of the most beloved popular anthologies of the Savoy operas. The collaboration of Gilbert and Sullivan, produced under the impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte at the Savoy Theatre in London, transformed the English musical stage and has influenced writers of musical comedy ever since.
