Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) was the most influential and admired figure in the American musical theater of the past century, a composer and lyricist whose work redefined what the Broadway musical could achieve. Beginning as the lyricist for West Side Story and Gypsy, he went on to write both music and lyrics for a remarkable succession of landmark shows, among them Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods, winning eight Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize, and an Academy Award. Finishing the Hat, published in 2010 and titled after a song from Sunday in the Park with George, is the first of two volumes collecting his lyrics from 1954 to 1981, annotated throughout with Sondheim’s incisive reflections on his craft and on the art of lyric writing, and with his frank assessments of his predecessors and contemporaries. A companion volume, Look, I Made a Hat, followed in 2011.
