The Limited Edition de Luxe of the complete works of Tolstoy, the acclaimed translation under the editorship of the Harvard Slavicist Leo Wiener. Octavo, twenty eight volumes finely bound in three-quarter navy straight-grain morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in five compartments within raised gilt bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated with photogravure plates with printed tissue guards. One of 1,000 numbered copies, this is number 817. The set comprises twenty-one titles in twenty-eight volumes, among them War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and Resurrection, together with Tolstoy’s shorter fiction, plays, and philosophical and religious writings. In near fine condition, bookplate to each pastedown. An attractive set.

Count Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was one of the greatest novelists in world literature, the author of the monumental War and Peace and Anna Karenina, works of unmatched scope and psychological depth. Born into the Russian aristocracy, he underwent a profound spiritual crisis in middle age that turned him toward a radical Christian pacifism and asceticism, expounded in later works such as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, ideas that would influence figures from Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Jr. This Edition de Luxe, published in Boston by Dana Estes & Company in the translation and under the editorship of the Harvard Slavic scholar Leo Wiener, gathers Tolstoy’s novels, stories, plays, and philosophical and religious writings in twenty-eight volumes.
