1850 Edition of Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through the United States; In the Original Pictorial Binding
An 1850 edition of one of the most popular American pocket travel guides of its day, charting the railroad, stage, steamboat, and canal routes of the antebellum United States. Tricesimo-secondo, bound in the original gilt-pictorial cloth, the covers stamped in gilt with vignettes of a steamboat and a railroad train within a blind-tooled border. Without the folding map of the United States called for on the title page, as is frequently the case with these well-traveled guides. In good condition with rubbing and wear to the extremities, and toning to the text. Ownership signature to the front free endpaper. An appealing example of a mid-nineteenth-century American traveler’s guide in its decorative publisher’s binding.
Mitchell’s New Traveller’s Guide Through the United States was one of the most widely used American travel guides of the mid-nineteenth century, compiled by the Philadelphia mapmaker Samuel Augustus Mitchell. Arranged alphabetically by city and town, it laid out the principal railroad, stage, steamboat, and canal routes of the country together with the distances between places, serving the rapidly expanding network of antebellum travel. Issued in a compact pocket format and accompanied by a folding map of the United States, it became a standard reference for Americans on the move in the decades before the Civil War.
