First Edition of James Fogle's Drugstore Cowboy; Signed by Matt Dillon, Star of the Acclaimed 1989 Film Adaptation
First edition of James Fogle's autobiographical novel. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Boldly signed by actor Matt Dillon on the half-title page. Illustrated on the covers with stills from Gus Van Sant's celebrated 1989 film adaptation, in which Dillon starred as Bob Hughes, the magnetic ringleader of a crew of young addicts who fund their habit by robbing drug stores across early-1970s Oregon. The role marked a turning point in Dillon's career and won him the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. A New York native who had become a teen idol through his performances in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptations of S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders and Rumble Fish (both 1983), Dillon used Drugstore Cowboy to remake himself as a serious adult actor, going on to memorable roles in To Die For (1995), There's Something About Mary (1998), Wild Things (1998), and Crash (2004), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Van Sant's film, co-starring Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham, James Remar, and the Beat writer William S. Burroughs as a defrocked, drug-addicted priest, was voted Best Film of 1989 by the National Society of Film Critics and swept the Independent Spirit Awards, bringing Fogle's long-unpublished novel into print the following year. In very good condition. A desirable example signed by the star of the film.
Drugstore Cowboy is the autobiographical first novel of James Fogle (1936-2012), a career criminal and lifelong drug addict who spent much of his life behind bars and drew the book directly from his own experiences robbing pharmacies. Set among a "crew" of young addicts in early-1970s Portland, Oregon, the manuscript circulated for years and remained unpublished until the success of its screen adaptation finally brought it to print. Directed by Gus Van Sant from a screenplay he wrote with Daniel Yost, the 1989 film Drugstore Cowboy starred Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham, James Remar, and the Beat writer William S. Burroughs, and became one of the most acclaimed American independent films of its era: it was voted Best Film of 1989 by the National Society of Film Critics and won four Independent Spirit Awards, among them Best Screenplay and Best Male Lead for Dillon. The novel was first published by Delta in 1990, in the wake of the film's triumph. Fogle, in and out of prison for most of his life, published further fiction but never escaped the world his work described; he died in 2012 while incarcerated in a Washington state correctional facility.
