Trevanian (1931–2005), the pseudonym of American author Rodney William Whitaker, was a novelist and academic known for his genre-defying works that blend elements of thriller, satire, and literary fiction. Initially gaining fame with novels such as The Eiger Sanction (1972) and The Loo Sanction (1973), Trevanian established a reputation for sophisticated, often ironic narratives that both engage with and critique popular genre conventions. The Main (1976) by Trevanian is a gritty and darkly engaging crime novel set in Montreal, centered on a group of homicide detectives working along Saint-Laurent Boulevard—“the Main,” a dividing line between cultures, classes, and moral worlds. Blending procedural realism with sharp characterization and gallows humor, the novel follows the detectives as they navigate a series of violent crimes, personal struggles, and the psychological toll of police work.
