“Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them": John Updike's Rabbit, Run; Signed by Him
First edition, second printing of the first book in the Rabbit quartet. Octavo, original publisher's blue cloth, stamp of number 23 to the top of the textblock and "Library Copy" to the bottom. Boldly signed by John Updike on the title page. Very good in a very good dust jacket with rubbing and soiling. Jacket panels are adhered to the front and rear pastedowns with a small green piece of paper stating "Minimum 25C" affixed to the front cover with tape. Ownership plate to the front free endpaper and stamp to the front pastedown.
Upon publication The New York Times praised Updike for his “artful and supple” style in his “tender and discerning study of the desperate and the hungering in our midst’s.” American novelist Joyce Carol Oates has written that Updike is “a master, like Flaubert, of mesmerizing us with his narrative voice even as he might repel us with the vanities of human desire his scalpel exposes.” Time magazine named Rabbit, Run as one of the 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
