First edition of this entertaining inside look at the greatest horse race in America. Octavo, original publisher’s green cloth, top stain orange, illustrated profusely with black and white photographs by Mike Tonegawa. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Canfield and Shook.

The Kentucky Derby, first run in 1875 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States and one of the most prestigious races in Thoroughbred horse racing. Known as the “Run for the Roses,” the Derby has produced legendary champions such as Secretariat, whose record-setting 1973 victory remains one of the most celebrated performances in racing history, as well as Citation, Seattle Slew, and American Pharoah, all Triple Crown winners. Limited to three-year-old horses and contested over 1¼ miles, the race combines elite competition with deep-rooted tradition, including the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home” and the presentation of a garland of roses to the winner.
