Justin McCarthy (1830–1912) was an Irish nationalist politician, journalist, and historian whose writings shaped late nineteenth-century interpretations of British and Irish political life. A Member of Parliament for the Irish Parliamentary Party and at one time its leader, McCarthy combined active political engagement with a substantial literary career, producing historical works, biographies, and novels. 'A History of Our Own Times: From the Accession of Queen Victoria to the Berlin Congress' is a multi-volume political history that surveys British and European affairs from 1837 to 1878. Focusing on parliamentary reform, imperial expansion, party politics, and major international crises, McCarthy presents a narrative shaped by liberal principles and close attention to political leadership and public debate.
