“And in friendship and still more here, in this central business of love, accident rules it seems to me almost altogether”: First Edition of H.G. Wells' The Passionate Friends
First edition of this novel, which was the first introduction of Wells' notion of an "open conspiracy" of individuals to achieve a world state through an "open conspiracy against potentates and prejudices and all the separating powers of darkness." Octavo, original publisher's green cloth with titles stamped in gilt and botanical detailing stamped in blind. In very good condition, signature to the front free endpaper. From the collection of British science fiction author Christopher Priest. Priest’s most famous works include The Inverted World (1974), the interconnected “Dream Archipelago” series, and The Prestige (1995), which was adapted into the 2006 Academy Award nominee film of the same name by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Caine.
"Notable for its discussion of the ideas which Wells later elaborated in The World of William Clissold and The Open Conspiracy. The phrase, "the open conspiracy," first occurs in The Passionate Friends (page 270)" (Hammond A9). Two films have been made from the novel, one in 1923 and another in 1949, directed by David Lean.
