While confined to bed with advanced tuberculosis in a provincial sanitarium, Dick Corvey meditates on various events from his earlier life and is visited by the Vodi, a malevolent race of small creatures who seek to persecute and destroy the unlucky. Although the novel was not an initial success, it was Braine's own favorite. Martin Seymour-Smith described it as a "more interesting and imaginative work" than Room at the Top. Michael John Harrison proclaimed it one of his favorite books of all time and defined it as "kitchen sink gothic".
