First edition in English of Tolstoy's five-act drama, the performance of which was forbidden in Russia until 1902. Octavo, original wrappers, publisher's advertisements. Translated from the original Russian. In very good condition. Scarce.
The Dominion of Darkness was written by Tolstoy in 1886 in furtherance of his plans to raise the moral tone of the Russian moujiks. It was brought out with very great success at a popular theatre in St. Petersburg, but the Russian Government speedily interfered and stopped the performances and forbid it being sold in book form. In spite of the ban, the play was unofficially produced and read numerous times and performed in 1888 in Paris at the Théâtre Montparnasse to great acclaim.
