First performed in 1958 at the Edinburgh Festival, Eliot's The Elder Statesman became the third of his plays to enjoy great critical success. In The Manchester Guardian, Philip Hope Wallace wrote of the work: "What Mr. Eliot wishes to tell us [in the Elder Statesman] is something profoundly true and important; that we cannot flee the past or 'retire' from responsibility - we can at best only off-load it by contrition."
