Scarce Pre-Earthquake San Francisco View Book
Scarce pre-earthquake view book of San Francisco and its famous buildings and landscape vistas. Oblong duodecimo, original brown half cloth with gilt titles, floral pictorial endpapers, illustrated with black and white photographs throughout. In very good condition with some rippling to cloth at the spine, light toning to the front panel, slight splitting to the interior hinges, a few thumb stains to the title page. Extremely rare. OCLC/WorldCat cites only 2 copies, those held at Santa Cruz Public Library and Yale University.
The photographs in this view book are a snapshot of the nature, life, and architecture of California before the Great Earthquake of 1906 that struck Northern California. With an estimated moment magnitude of 7.9, the earthquake's high intensity shaking and subsequent fires resulted in over 3,000 deaths and destruction of over 80% of the city, making it the deadliest earthquake in the history of the United States. Reconstruction was largely completed by 1915, but some of the remaining structures exist as historic landmarks today.
