First edition, first issue of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist; Finely Bound by Bayntun
First edition, first issue of “the most perfect of all the Dickens novels” (Virginia Woolf). Octavo, three volumes bound in full polished calf by Bayntun with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, with half-title in first and second volumes, one (of two) ad leaves at rear of first volume, and ad leaf at front of third volume. Illustrated with three etched frontispieces and 21 etched plates by George Cruikshank. First issue (with "Boz" on each title-page and with "Fireside" plate in third volume). Original cloth bound in at rear of each volume. Smith I, 35; Eckel, pp. 59-62. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. A very nice example.
"Dickens turned in Oliver Twist to the novel of crime and terror Some characters are drawn with humorous realism, but for the most part humor is dimmed by gloomy memories of the author’s own neglected childhood and sensational scenes are shrouded in an atmosphere genuinely eerie and sinister That Dickens shared with his contemporaries the conviction that the novel should be an instrument of social reform is evident in Oliver Twist" (Baugh).
