The South African novelist J.M. Coetzee is the recipient of the 1985 Prix Femina Étranger, the 1999 Book Prize, and the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature. Life & Times of Michael K. won the 1983 Booker Prize for its depiction of an arduous journey from civil war-ridden urban South Africa to the chracter's mother's rural birthplace, during apartheid era, in the 1970-80s.
