During the American Civil War (1861–1865), the principal military leadership of the opposing sides was embodied by the generals of the Union (United States) and the Confederate States of America. The Union Army ultimately came under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, whose strategy of coordinated offensives and sustained pressure across multiple fronts helped exhaust Confederate forces and secure victory. On the Confederate side, Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, emerged as the most prominent military leader, renowned for his tactical skill and bold battlefield maneuvers despite limited resources. Other notable commanders included Union generals William Tecumseh Sherman and George G. Meade, and Confederate leaders such as Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and James Longstreet. The decisions and strategies of these military leaders played a decisive role in shaping the course and outcome of the conflict, which culminated in Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
