J.K. Rowling's first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone; Inscribed by her to Colin Powell
Early printing of the first book in the Harry Potter series. Octavo, original illustrated boards. Presentation copy, inscribed by J.K. Rowling on the title page, "To General Powell, best wishes J.K. Rowling." The recipient, American statesman Colin Powell served as the 65th United States Secretary of State under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. A retired four-star general of the United States Army, he previously served as National Security Advisor, Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the position he likely held when Rowling inscribed the present volume to him. Fine in a fine dust jacket. A rare and desirable association.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first novel in the Harry Potter series and J. K. Rowling's debut novel, first published in 1997 by Bloomsbury. The writing has been compared to that of Jane Austen, one of Rowling's favourite authors, or Roald Dahl, whose works dominated children's stories before the appearance of Harry Potter, and of the Ancient Greek story-teller Homer. It has been translated into several languages and has been made into a feature-length film of the same name.
