The Gettysburg National Military Park Commission was appointed May 25, 1893 by Secretary of War Daniel S. Lamont and consisted of Lieut. Col. John P. Nicholson, John B. Bachelder, and Brig. Gen. W. H. Forney. The organization was formed to protect and interpret the the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. The GNMP properties include most of the Gettysburg Battlefield, many of the battle's support areas during the battle (e.g., reserve, supply, and hospital locations), and several other non-battle areas associated with the battle's "aftermath and commemoration," including the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
