American tycoon Henry Morrison Flagler essentially established Palm Beach, Florida as an exclusive winter destination with the development of The Florida East Coast Railway in the late 1800's and construction of the Gilded Age Royal Poinciana Hotel in 1894. The town flourished in the early 1900s with the construction of the Italian Renaissance-style Breakers Hotel, exclusive Everglades Club, and historic Worth Avenue. Many of the gorgeous homes and resorts that remain Palm Beach icons were designed by American architect Addison Mizner in the Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival that has come to define the winter destination.
