American basketball coach James "Jimmy V" Valvano is most remembered for leading North Carolina State University to victory against improbable odds in the 1983 NCAA Championship and his ecstatic televised celebration following the historic win. The annual Jimmy V Classic tournament was established in Valvano's honor and in support of cancer victims and survivors in 1993 after his death by adenocarcinoma. a type of glandular cancer.
