Jean Phillippe Vogel worked with the Archaeological Survey of India from 1901 to 1914 and later as Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Archaeology at the University of Leyden in Holland. Serpent-Lore is an exhaustive study of the Nagas (mythical semi-divine half-man half-cobras) in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, with particular attention to their depictions in early sculpture and art.
