The “Big Four”—Woodrow Wilson of the United States, David Lloyd George of Great Britain, Georges Clemenceau of France, and Vittorio Orlando of Italy—were the principal leaders who directed the negotiations of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, convened after the end of the First World War to determine the terms of peace and reshape the international order. Although representatives from many nations attended the conference, these four figures exercised the greatest influence over the drafting of the peace settlements, particularly the Treaty of Versailles with Germany. Each arrived with distinct national priorities: Wilson promoted his idealistic program for international cooperation embodied in the Fourteen Points and the creation of the League of Nations, Clemenceau sought strong security guarantees and substantial reparations to protect France from future German aggression, Lloyd George attempted to balance punitive measures with the need for European economic and political stability, and Orlando pressed for the territorial concessions promised to Italy during the war. The negotiations and compromises among these leaders ultimately shaped the postwar settlement, though the tensions between their competing objectives contributed to an agreement that proved both controversial and unstable in the years that followed.
