Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who reigned from 1949 to 2005, was a transformative figure in the principality’s modern history. He is credited with diversifying Monaco’s economy beyond its traditional reliance on gambling, developing it into a center of international finance and tourism. His reign was marked by significant constitutional reform in 1962, which reduced the absolute power of the monarchy and introduced a more balanced governmental structure. Rainier’s 1956 marriage to American actress Grace Kelly brought global attention to Monaco, reinforcing its image as a glamorous, sovereign microstate. His long and stable rule helped ensure Monaco’s political continuity and international prestige in the postwar era.
