Captain James Cook’s voyages of exploration during the late 18th century played a pivotal role in expanding European geographical knowledge and fueled widespread public fascination with the Pacific world. Undertaken between 1768 and 1779, Cook’s three major expeditions—commissioned by the British Admiralty and the Royal Society—combined scientific inquiry with imperial ambition, resulting in the detailed mapping of previously uncharted territories, including the east coast of Australia, New Zealand, and numerous Pacific islands. The official published accounts of his voyages, richly illustrated and meticulously edited, quickly became bestsellers, appealing to both scientific and general audiences. These narratives were celebrated not only for their empirical rigor but also for their vivid descriptions of exotic lands and peoples, feeding into Enlightenment ideals of discovery and progress. The popularity of Cook’s voyages in book form was further amplified by unauthorized reprints, abridged versions, and translations, including more affordable editions published in Dublin and other cities, which broadened their readership. As a result, Cook’s accounts helped shape European perceptions of the Pacific and contributed significantly to the genre of travel literature, transforming the explorer into a heroic figure and his voyages into cultural touchstones of the era.
