First Wessex Edition of Hardy's A Pair Of Blue Eyes
First Wessex Edition of Hardy's classic novel that explores the themes of love and fate. Octavo, original publisher's wrappers. Previous ownership signiture on the front free endpaper. In near fine condition with light bumping to the crown and foot of the spine.
A novel that explores themes of love, class, fate, and the conflict between intellect and emotion. The novel follows the romantic entanglements of Elfride Swancourt, a young and impressionable woman, and her two suitors: Stephen Smith, an ambitious but socially inferior architect, and Henry Knight, a worldly and intellectual critic. The novel is notable for its autobiographical elements, as Hardy draws upon his own experiences, particularly in the character of Stephen Smith, who shares Hardy’s background in architecture. Through Elfride’s shifting affections and the tragic consequences of her indecision, Hardy critiques Victorian social conventions and the rigid class structure that dictates relationships and individual aspirations. One of the novel’s most famous scenes, in which Henry Knight dangles precariously over a cliff while Elfride attempts to save him, symbolizes the larger tensions between tradition and progress, as well as gender dynamics in the Victorian era. Additionally, Hardy employs natural imagery and fate-driven coincidences to foreshadow the ultimate tragedy, a technique that would become a hallmark of his later works.
