The Memoir, Correspondence, and Miscellanies, From the Papers of Thomas Jefferson; finely bound in full levant morocco
Second edition of the first published collection of Jefferson’s writings, an impressive four-volume work edited by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph. Octavo, four volumes bound in full levant morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, two-page facsimile of "A Declaration by the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled" and engraved frontispiece portrait and facsimiles in Volume I. In near fine condition. A very sharp set.
The first collected writings of Thomas Jefferson, published three years after his death, were meticulously edited by his grandson and estate executor, Thomas Jefferson Randolph. This foundational volume includes Jefferson's autobiographical memoir, penned at the age of seventy-seven, alongside a journal documenting his tenure as Secretary of State. Complementing these personal reflections are selections of correspondence not previously included in government publications. A notable feature of the collection is the folding facsimile of Jefferson's original rough draft of the Declaration of Independence, complete with his emendations. The engraved frontispiece, based on the iconic Gilbert Stuart portrait, enhances the historical significance of the work. According to bibliographer Henry Stevens, the publication "marked the beginning of Jefferson's canonization in the American consciousness, presenting him as both a thinker and a statesman." William Peden, in The Jefferson Image in the American Mind, emphasized its importance, stating, "This collection laid the foundation for the enduring veneration of Jefferson as the Sage of Monticello, revealing not only his intellectual rigor but also the complexity of his vision for the young republic." This edition remains a cornerstone in Jeffersonian scholarship, a pivotal work that both preserves and elevates his legacy.
