This book, about a talentless newspaper reporter named Quoyle who relocates to Newfoundland with his two troubled daughters, won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. “The Shipping News is an exhilarating book brimming with ideas, stories, places and people— the narrative can barely contain them all. Proulx is that rare thing, a writer suffused with the joy of life in spite of its tragedies” (Parker, 672). It is the basis for the 2001 Lasse Hallstrom film bearing the same name starring Kevin Spacey as Quoyle, Judi Dench as Agnis Hamm, and Julianne Moore as Wavey Prowse.
