"Wootton Major it was called because it was not very large, though it was at that time prosperous": First edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's Smith of Wootton Major
First edition of Tolkien's classic fairy story. Small octavo, illustrated. Fine in a near fine dust jacket, bookplate to the pastedown. Jacket photograph of Tolkien by Roger Hill.
Originally titled The Great Cake, Tolkien originally intended Smith of Wootton Major to act as a preface to George MacDonald's famous fairy story, The Golden Key. The story soon grew into a story in its own right about the small village of Wootton Major, renowned for its annual culinary festivals. The novella was first published in the United States in the 1967 Christmas edition of Redbook, but without the illustrations by Pauline Baynes which first appeared in the present volume.
