First Edition of Ernest C. Carpenter's The Boyhood Days of Calvin Coolidge; inscribed by Calvin Coolidge
First edition of this account of Coolidge's youth written by his former schoolteacher in Plymouth, Vermont. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers, illustrated, frontispiece of Coolidge with Attorney General John Galbraith Sargent. Presentation copy, inscribed by Calvin Coolidge opposite the foreword, "To S. W. Jackson Without recourse Calvin Coolidge." With the recipient's bookplate to the pastedown. In very good condition.
Carpenter states in his preface: "This book is not an attempt to write a complete history of Plymouth. Neither is it a complete biography of President Calvin Coolidge, nor an attempt to make a full estimate of his character or public services. Its sole aim is to picture truthfully the people and customs of his birthplace, Plymouth, Vermont, in the 70's and 80's when Mr. Coolidge was passing through his childhood and youth in that community. The writer was born in that town, and had exceptional opportunities for knowing things of which he has written. He was the teacher in the district ungraded school attended by Calvin Coolidge. Many have tried to find the key to the President's mind and character. The author's opinion is that it is to be found in the background of early associations in that Green Mountain Hamlet."
